They have been captured for a marking they wish not to have - an Outcast mark.  It's a mark that they're being sent away for - into the barren lands beyond the safety of Elseriyel.

Finn Casters is convinced that his run of bad luck is over.  He believes only so many bad things can happen to a person, or at least, the good person he seems to think he is.  Or, could the supposed tale of the Casters curse finally be coming to the surface for his generation?

Cora Maydeen-Grey has had her worst fears confirmed.  A black-as-night marking on her right hip appears as if from nowhere, and she is shipped off, left to fend for herself.  She's not prepared - no training, no mental preparation, nothing.  And outside the safety of the Elseriyelian cities, preparation is the key to life.
 
When the two are thrown together, they think they've been given a second chance - another chance to live, another life to lead.  To them, it's a gift.
