Fairview Falls is a quietly glamorous town with an old-money population; a visit here is like a walk back in time. The tea is sweet, the floors are waxed, and the carpets always match the drapes.
But beneath this polished exterior is a filthy, rotten secret. Every spring for as long as Marie Dubois can remember, the town’s most beautiful young woman has been found bludgeoned to death.Whoever was responsible has been so thorough that dental records are of no use. Dubbed the “Splintered Girls”, these lovely young victims haunt those who remain.
But poor Marie is the opposite of beautiful. Tormented by her classmates and unable to connect with those around her, her life is a dull succession of tiny humiliations. It’s enough to make her wish to be a Splintered Girl, so she can feel what it’s like to be lovely just once. But when she awakens on a balmy May morning, a change has shaken her to her core. Her life becomes a twisted joke of fate, and she discovers that everything she thought she knew about herself and her family has been a lie - this new knowledge drives her to uncover the dark source of the murders.
