Rynn Connaughy has two masks: the one she wears all day at school, and the one she takes off when she comes home. Living a double life has its problems, especially when she has to hide the fact that she lives in an abusive household, or that she cries herself to sleep every night with no one left to comfort her but herself. The future for her seems pretty bleak, and she wants nothing more than to take a step away from her life and get swept away with the California current. Matt Redford, the "strange" new kid in town, is her polar opposite. He's laid back, charming, and always in a good mood. When Rynn's home life takes a turn for the worse, she is surprised to see her path crossing with Matt's. The charming, easy-going boy doesn't have such a charming past, and Rynn finds herself turning to the most unlikely person she could trust with her secrets - but he has his own secrets too. As Matt and Rynn embark on a journey of self-discovery, bravery, and strength, they must prove to themselves that despite it all, their lives are worth living, and that laughter and love are sometimes worth taking a chance.
