With Leina's brother by her side, she learns that her even being alive got her mother and father floated. She found out that in order for her to live was to exterminate the people that brought her into the world. When she turned 14 she learned that her even being born was a crime, and when they tried to take her away to the cells, she fought back. After the accidental murder of one of the guards, Chancellor Jaha had her thrown in to the space-lock where she would spend 2 years there until she was unexpectedly put on a dropship that was sending the 100 prisoners there to their death.
