I was raised in Kenya, and I always wanted to be an actress from when I was really, really, little, but the first time I thought it was something that I could make a career of,was when I watched 'The Colour Purple.' I think I was nine, maybe, and I saw people that looked like me. I hope that my presence on your screen and my face in magazines may lead you, young girls on a beautiful journey. That you will feel the validation of external beauty, but also get to the deeper business. -🌟Lupita Nyong'o🌟

I invite you to share in our journey. I started writing this book 13 May 2008 It takes you through our whole experience of rising up and prospering in South Africa - even under a racist ANC government. I've written this book as an inspiration, that even in the face of huge adversity, you can come out on the other side and make it. However, my wish for you is not to only "make it" - but live your best life. I invite you to come on this journey with us. It was sometimes an emotional rollercoaster with many trials and tribulations, but the end result was worth it. This book is very special and unique in the sense that it was started and written while I was at the lowest point in my life with no salvation in sight... It's wasn't written in hindsight or after the fact. It started with hope, a dream, a promise. You will see when you start going through these pages - If I could make it, surely you can. The book also has a public Facebook page "How we made it in South Africa" with loads of pictures and videos of us and our adventures. You're most welcome to visit the page and say hi. Enjoy your journey.
