David Pond wanted nothing other than to stop the war that has lasted centuries. He believes the only way to stop the war is to build a time machine and go back in time to make sure the war never starts. What if fate has other plans in stored for him? What if he was starting the war while trying to stop it?

Humans are dead. They've been gone for six thousand years, leaving behind the machines they built when they all managed to kill each other. Machines do not die until their reactors corrupt, and they can go on for thousands of years before falling apart. Machines start from the original systems (they're poorly made androids), and then they started giving them names. Iskil, the most dangerous machine known to date, is one of the oldest systems that still stands, and he claims that he could never die. Whether that's true or not, he's behind bars, and there's no way to escape. Will Iskil stay there until all machines expire, or will he somehow get out?
