Gaza is almost 16 when her best friend Devon finds letters that reveal the truth about her fathers death. She learns that her father was murdered by his own brother, who is the evil king. She also learns things about herself that she didn't even know- that she has magical powers. Her father tells her that only she is able to defeat the evil king, her own uncle, and kill him. Her father tells her in the letters that she must befriend the trolls who will teach her how to use her own powers. Her father tells her that she must be strong and brave, but will she have enough courage? Her friend, Devon, will stand by her side so she won't have to do it alone. But is there more in the relationship than just a best friend? Gaza and Devon find that they share deeper feelings about each other than they ever knew about.
