Chenoa hears the same story every year. Passed down from person to person, it sounds like any other folk tale. Some scary monster lives on the mountain. He mustn't be disturbed or people will die, blah...blah...blah... And even though no one ventures higher than the backpacking trails designated by the village elders, she doesn't give the tale much heed.
It's all superstition--an exaggeration to scare children and discourage foolish teenagers and visitors from venturing too far up the mountain and injuring themselves. It's just a story. That's why she accepts an affable dare to climb to the mountain's crest and spend the night alone. But what she unearths there will have her believing in folk tales again.
