The music plays, and I can't look away from her. She opens her eyes. Her right hand slowly running down her shoulder. She begins to sing. "Put your hand on my shoulder. Never let me go". Her voice. Her voice is one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard. So soft. So powerful. I have finally seen an angel. The year is 1944. In the heat of World War II, amidst the grueling training and impending battles, Michael, James, and Steven find solace in the small joys of life. When they are moved to a quaint town for their final training, they encounter a world untouched by the horrors of war. Henry enlists in the military against his parents' wishes and throws himself into the life of a British soldier in Flanders. But it is far from what he expects: Henry's fantasies of righteous battle fade into the grim reality of gruesome death and shell-shock. He and his fellow soldier Jacob must help each other survive the cruel trenches, but it is no longer certain that either of them will return to England alive. Told in journal entries and letters from Henry's sister Elizabeth, this reveals the realities and horrors of World War I, on the battlefield and in the homefront. There, she meets Major John "Bucky" Egan, who she finds is one of the most annoying men she's ever met- though, the more time she spends with him, the harder she finds herself falling for him. The only question is if the two will live to see their blossoming romance grow as the harsh war rages on.
