When the old world is destroyed to save mankind everything is meant to fix itself. The Council is meant to lead. The Protectors to protect. And the simplicities of life re-establish themselves so that mankind will florish. What happens when the problem seems to be mankind itself?

The last Protector takes her responsibilities, though unwanted, seriously. So much so that, for the past 19 years, she's been held captive by her own father. A man changed and searching for the one thing that everyone wants from her. The relics of old. Rumor has it that if you old those than you can hold the world. She'll stop at nothing to keep them from her father, the Council and her intended, Simon.

With help from unknonwn friends she'll finally escape. She'll learn that being the last protector may not be as awful as she's always imagined. She might even accomplish what her mother always wanted to, the legacy left to her nearly 20 years ago.

If only the Council and Simon would leave her alone. If only she wasn't falling for Liam. If only he wasn't falling for her. If only everything was as it seemed.

Life has a funny way of surprising us when we think we're at our lowest. Thing is - there's always HOPE.

It's been five years since the plague struck. Leah knows there are other survivors, but she's avoiding them. She is doing just fine on her own. Surviving after everyone she knew died has made her physically strong and honed her intelligence, but she is emotionally devastated. There is nothing to fear if you don't make yourself emotionally vulnerable. James has spent the last five years helping to build up a colony of survivors. He believes in the small town they have populated and its mission to save humanity from extinction. He and his small team of men find scattered people and bring them in. Over the last two centuries, women have fought for and won more and more rights, gaining equality with men. Society, law, and technology bolsters and enforces these rights, but now they are gone. Women's equality with men is over. There are just too few of them. They aren't lesser but greater, more important, more valuable than men. Men are expendable. Men can stay outside alone if they like, but all women must be brought inside the safety of the Colony and properly taken care of. James has been searching the area Leah lives in. Her time of solitude is up. Leah sparks something in James he's never felt before. He's not letting this one get away, certainly not twice.
