In East Arwick, a small town on the border of Vermont, there lives a 12 year old girl fighting a fierce battle, a battle waged within herself, where she has no allies. Her name is Brooke Ellis.
Diagnosed with severe ADHD and epilepsy, Brooke struggles to make it through seventh grade like any other girl, but with teachers who view her as dim, coaches who view her as weak, and peers who view her as a nobody, she feels more alone than ever. Brooke's only freedom is running, and the beacon of hope that lights her way is called the Springer's Race, the largest race in the group of towns known as Arwick, open to anyone in grades seven to ten. And for the first time, Brooke is eligible. She may just win this battle yet.
Through a series of events, each tearing away at Brooke's heart, she becomes less sure of herself, until a disaster from a nightmare leaves her and everyone around her devastated. Now more alone than ever, Brooke will have to overcome more challenge and heartbreak than she has ever encountered. Only if she succeeds will she make across the finish line.

And that's when reality punched me in the gut... the words 'this boy' kept running through my head over and over again until it got through the thick fog of vodlka and whatever else was in those stupid drinks. I, Ace Loughty, was kissing a guy. A fucking guy. A fucking straight guy named Charlie Simmons who of course had to be one of the most popular dickheads in Meadow Ridge High. I am so unbelievably fucked. ----- 17 year old Ace Loughty was never one longing to be in the spotlight. In fact, he craved the exact opposite: being left alone. When Ace was 13, the tragic death of his younger sister Eleanor caused him to rapidly gain popularity and pitiful looks. He hated the attention. All of a sudden everyone wanted to be friends with the dead girls brother, they'd promise Ace he would never be alone that they would always be there for him, which he of course knew was untrue, they're all just hungry for attention. He moved on with his life, convincing himself he was over Eleanor's death and as quick as the whole thing started, he returned to being lonely, weird, quiet nobody Ace. Just how he liked it. That is until 4 years later when he found himself sprawled out on a bed. With Charlie Simmons hovering over him. Charlie Simmons who was kissing Ace like he would die if he ever dared to stop. I held it up and aimed it at the target. "Ma I cant do it" I cried to her. Growing up hearing and seeing guns is one thing but to actually use one is a whole other thing She rolled her eyes "Avianna Erika Vega do you want me to go call Alejandro to encourage you?" "n-no! no ill do it" I said and turned back to the target Come on Avianna you can do it, just one little thing. Also Available On Inkitt "Can I ask you something?" She asked softly. "Sure," he smiled. She looked up at him. "Why did you want to be my friend? I mean, there were so many people to choose from. Why me? I'm not even worth it." "You looked so lonely. So sad, so hidden. You looked like you were so used to being silent. But I knew there was more to it than what meets the eye. I wanted to decode the mystery." He looked deep into her eyes. "So what do you want?" She held his gaze, even though she hated eye contact. He smiled softly and sang, "All I wanna be, all I ever wanna be, is somebody to you." ________________________________________________ Darkness and shadows were all she ever saw. She lived in silence, her whole world a monochromatic display that only she could see. Her red rimmed glasses only made clearer her strife and the elastic band on her left wrist reminded her of her long lived sorrow. She hid from the world, going unnoticed by everyone, slowly crumbling to dust on her own. That was all until one faithful day when someone did the unthinkable and decided that she was worth noticing. She was the girl in the grey hoodie. And he was someone who cared. Take your mind on a journey of two unique souls, sprinkle in a little friendship, a teaspoon of tears, a spoon of laughter and fun and maybe a pinch of violence and love with a hint of secrets. And while you wait for that delicious cake to bake, a good sing along won't hurt. Sometimes, I just want to write out my feelings, y'know. It's okay to write what's going on in your head. It's okay to open a clean page and just write all the things you've held onto. It's okay to let loss on a piece of paper with a pen/pencil at hand. Most definitely It's okay to write your trauma, only if you're comfortable with. This book is my thoughts or rambles when I did/do have those episodes. I hate venting to people. I never could have trusted them. Yet, i can write, peot, and type what's going on or rant til i feel I find it in a book. It's okay to cry. You're not alone. No one is alone You are loved by many. ~Alh
