When the Academy comes under siege from Prince Ellatar's new fleet, a special emissary is sent to convince neighboring countries Estraye and Twyla to aid Dralina in an alliance. Daniel is one of the only people who witnessed Ellatar's declaration of war on the rest of the planet, and his testimony is vital to convincing the Serani and the Elves that resisting Ellatar is a pressing concern. There's just one problem with that: Daniel is angry about how he's been treated and refuses to do anything for the Dralinian government ever again.
Meanwhile, the council searches for a viable heir to the throne of Dralina to oppose Ellatar, and the Sylphs' forecasts of Destiny threaten to interfere with Daniel and Cass's relationship.
