When I was young, I was always told that everyone loved a tragic Greek love story. Orpheus and Eurydice. Apollo and Hyacinth. Hero and Leander. Achilles and Patroclus. I had asked my mother why so many of those stories didn't have happy endings. She just gave me a grim smile and told me how the world of the gods was tricky.
