13 year old Shadow has been depressed for a very long time. She's been bullied and abused for as long as she can remember. She doesn't blame anyone saying that she's just getting what she deserves. Shadow refuses to admit that she's depressed, and goes out of her way to make people think she's fine. She starts to self harm and even attempts suicide. The worst part is nobody notices the pain she's in. She tells herself it's because she's not important. Shadow meets some new friends and they help to save her life. Shadow starts listening to more music, but while she's getting better she's also getting worse. What will happen to Shadow? Read to find out.

From the beginning we see a 17 year old boy, struggling to finish high School, filled up with insecurities, mental health issues, a toxic family home, and impossible standards to live up to. He has learn to not only hate his life, but to want finish it off as fast as possible. Close to finally graduating high school his English teacher, Mr Steve, assigns the class a special progect. "To be able to see life through different eyes, and write about it." For this, Mr Steve gets his class to assist a hospital 3 times a week, and assigns each student, with a patient. This is the moment where this boy meets Royal, a cancer sick 17 year old girl, that has lived in a hospital her hole life, but still finds beauty and meaning in it. Through out the report the boy gets more and more involved in Royal's life, spending unfortunately moments together. But through out the journey he asks himself more and more.
