In the utopian society of Runako, whenever a child is born, their parents choose what features each of them pass on to the child and at what age each of them will die. The parents can also decide whether or not they tell their child their time and date of death. But what the parents don't get to decide is who their child's soulmate is.
Each child is born with a birthmark on their wrist. The only other person with the exact same birthmark is meant to be their soulmate.
John has a not-so-secret habit of breaking the rules and doing whatever he pleases. Stealing, doing drugs, you name it. John has done it all. He's come to terms with his death date, and he wants to live his short life to the fullest. That includes not wasting his time on a soulmate.
At least, that's what he wants to think.

Say one of them breaks their arm, the other wouldn't have a broken arm as well, they would simply be feeling the exact same amount of pain the other is feeling. It's a extremely scary part of having a soulmate since they would be able to feel if their soulmate is being beat but wouldn't be able to do anything about it. But when you kiss your soulmate for the first time, you tattoo glows and shows their name. But this only happens when it is love and love only. (So if you just kiss someone to kiss them then your tattoo won't glow) As for your soulmate dying, your tattoo turns black and shows a small picture of them with their name under. In this society, everyone has a soulmate. And the way to find yours is just look. Along with a soulmate, everyone has a small tattoo on their cheek with a symbol. Some could be a star, a flower, a yinyang, a fish, or even waves. There are so many people that the symbols are almost limitless. The tattoos don't care about gender or number. There could be gay matches, and there could even be polyamorous matches. The tattoos will tingle when you are near to your sm. And they will glow if you have found only one of your sm's if your match was poly. The trick is, you don't get the tattoo until you are 16. And even if you are near your match, as long as one of you are not of age, your tattoo will not tingle. Also, they are normal tattoos (except you don't get it or choose it, it just appears) so you can get rid of it. But if you do, your sm won't die but they will get very sick.
