When Tris' mother appears to her in the control room, her death seems certain. Tired and bloody, Tris prepares to finally give up. But then something happens...Her mother tells her that she has a choice. Plugged in on a life support system, Tris has fallen into a coma, and her lover Tobias waits, hopelessly by her side. Tris is still aware of the going on's around her, but she cannot find the strength wake up. Will Tris find a way to break out of this sleep, and join Tobias' side once again? Or will she be taken by the darkness, leaving Tobias alone?

At the end of Resurgent, Tris was saved by the resurgence serum. She was no longer convergent, she was cured. It's almost a year later since the war has ended.
