A woman runs from everything. 

A songbird joins her from nowhere, singing colors and images.

A whisperer finds the pair among a field of poplars and graves. 

A dark and vicious viper stalks them from deep in the earth.

They must flee from the Viper, at any cost. They must reach their safe haven--Aeolia.

On the way there, the woman and bird pass strange and foreign places--including the Bridge to Infinity, where they are blessed by the Mist; Canvas Valley, where they walk along Aeolian train tracks; Seasons' Spiral, where the seasons fight on an open savanna; Dreams' Lattice, home to a grand tamperer; and many more.

Along the way, new creatures help the woman and bird. But every time the Viper comes close, they choose to run--until at last they can't any longer.

They must fight or die.

Leila is full of fury at her circumstances only to become too sick to fight back anymore. To get one last use out of Leila before she succumbs to her sickness, the trappers tie her to a tree to lure out The Beast also killing in those woods.
