Terra's visions are back, and with renewed force as Antoinette and Madiera's past lives are told from compelling dreams and haunting visions. But Terra has more important things to worry about than them as Robbin sets to the dangerous task of uniting the four races of Carynthia. Hunt thinks he's a fool. The nomads single handedly try to stop him from pursuing the task, leaving Roland with an unprecedented amount of responsibility on his shoulders. The demons regard him with disgust and malicious bemusement. Rowan seems to be the only one on his side, and she has pale fur and claws. But no one can convince him out of it.

As Terra is left in the wake of his disastrous confrontation at his "peace rally," she must somehow convince her parents that the battle-scarred nomad she has brought home with her is actually "an exchange student," and she must teach Robbin to survive in her world. Meanwhile, Hunt and Roland are left to a sullen cave full of sadistic nomads who want revenge for Robbin's disappearance. Can Terra find a way to get them both back to Carynthia before all Robbin worked to build is torn apart by disagreement and debated leadership?
