Aang doesn't know he's alone, by meaning he's not the last Air Bender. When he searches through the rubble of the area his home was destroyed. He finds a girl, alive, but clearly weak. She is also a Air Bender. When Aang sets eyes on this girl, he feels something different. He stares at her for quiet some time.
