Excerpt:

The utility belt was the kind you'd expect to buy from B&Q only this was black and slick and looked more accustomed to holstering a gun than a paintbrush.

'What's that for?' I said.

He threaded part of the belt through the loops on his trousers. 'Best be prepared.'

What for? A sudden need to DIY?

Then I saw it, hanging from one of the utility belt hoops. Wooden and as thick and about a quarter length in size as a broom handle.

'What's that?' I stared at the pointed tip.

Jake rolled his eyes as if to say, you know what it is. 'Curious one aren't you? That's understandable. A stake. Not ideal, stakes should always be made fresh and dedicated to the one you're hunting. But we don't have time for that.'

My mouth hung open. Who the hell had I gotten into the car with?

Jake left the vehicle and approached the house I'd pointed out to him. Striding with all the determination of a door-to-door salesman intent on making a sale. People might have thought him one if door-to-door salesman were known for looking like they were about to jump into a mosh pit at a heavy metal concert.
