Dan has always been shown pity because of the loss of his mother. He doesn't particularly like it but it distracts him from the other issues in his life like his depression or his abusive father.
When Dan meets Phil, Dan is annoyed with how clingy Phil is. He just wants to be left alone so why is Phil so damn determined on making Dan his friend?
