Accidentally breaking into the home of a major public-enemy-in-hiding was either the best or worst idea Matilda has ever had. She's not quite sure.
--
When Matilda Ryler takes up 'emergency residence' in an unoccupied penthouse in the dirtiest part of town, she doesn't expect to run into much trouble - it takes time for apartments to be acquired and sold on, and by the time anybody figures out how to unlock the door, she'll already be halfway down the fire escape. It's not a comfortable lifestyle, or a safe one, for that matter, but in any case it's better than the world she left behind.

Without warning, her plans are suddenly thrown into disarray when she runs into the incumbent resident of the dilapidated apartment. Rugged, brash and wildly antisocial, she isn't entirely sure that this strange new man isn't a serial killer or some sort of nomad returned from 20 years in the wild. Yet something about him is familiar, and perhaps against both of their better judgements, she is able to talk her way into a temporary spot on his sofa.

But as time goes on, it becomes clear that both of them are concealing secrets from their pasts. Big, dark, earth-shattering secrets.

"If you love me, you won't leave me." Jessie has believed those words from her boyfriend, Josh, since senior year of high school. She loves him and doesn't want to leave him. Not even when he shouts at her and hits her. Jessie's best friend, Kolleen, can't stand seeing her in that situation. With a bit of convincing - and the worst beating she'd ever received - Jessie agrees to move into an apartment with Kolleen. But not long after, Jessie is scared the worst of her nightmares will soon become a reality. Josh goes missing, and suddenly Jessie would swear she's being followed. One night changes everything, and one person soon changes Jessie's outlook. A responding officer from that fateful night begins to seek her out, at first claiming it's part of his job. As she spends time with her new friend outside of his job, she starts realizing that her feelings are evolving. After being abused for over a year, Jessie is terrified she's falling in love. What's even more terrifying is that he might be, too. She isn't ready for love. Not yet. She makes up her mind that if he is falling, and if he does love her, he'll wait for her to be ready, and if she loves him, she won't let herself hurt him. "Friendship is not about who you've known from the longest or who you hang out with, it's about who walked into your life, said 'Hey, I'm here for you' and proved it. My friends proved it." Everyone has secrets and Julie has one that has been eating her alive. She tried to run from the guilt for years but the past comes haunting her new life. When her best friend exchanged her for the school's bad crew the little peace she had is lost. Awful and dangerous rumors surround Micah's "new friends", but what can she do when he doesn't even look at her anymore? Simple, she'll do the only Julie-thing to do: cut through everything like steel scissors and force him to face her. Even if that means threatening the guys that look like they could snap her neck, even if that means coming clean. Nick is a solid rock who would rather keep to himself and throw punches than let people in. People tend to leave anyway. But when a hurricane name Julie comes whirling into his fortress there's little he can do.
