His friends teasing Jake on this fact and regularly pranking the teacher, much to both of their discomfort, result to one of the boys being found dead the next day, and doubt to form in Jake's mind. 

Maybe the new teacher was not as friendly as she seems. According to Jake and his friends, there was more to their teacher than they actually saw.
