The law of matter states that matter cannot be created nor destroyed.
In Maria's world there are mortals, and Eternals, or the lucky mortals who were chosen to be immortal. These people are chosen for their outstanding beauty, at least they were until Maria showed up and a Senser saw her future.
One that would ultimately destroy matter itself. You see, matter can't be created, but Maria can change that.
As she fails her first Eternal contest she returns a second time and is immediately chosen, without going through any competition. The king and queen tell her she is something far stronger than any Wielder imaginable, and she must be contained.
So they tell her to marry their weak son, who has no powers. This way Maria won't destroy the delicate balance the country is in, or so they hope.
