Power can be seemingly endless, to the point where those who have it can forget those without. Even when those without power loved you, and you loved them, power can be more alluring than purity.
Maverick was thrown to the ground since his birth and knew the world as cruel and unforgivable. It was almost a sickening joke when he was gifted the amazing ability to control others with his voice, since it had been ignored so profusely in the past. Especially since he was gifted these powers so soon after meeting the one person who sparked what little hope remained within him.
The sickening parts of him still grasped to the power he was given, and he trusted the world to give him what he was owed after all the trauma. The law belonged to those who were frightened enough to seek help outside of themselves.
Or so he tells himself, but it's hard to believe that kind of thing when the love of your life is a cop.
