I couldn't help but watch him out of the corner of my eye: the way his brow furrowed up in concentration, the way he chewed on his lip as he thought, his messy hair falling over his face. I smiled to myself, thinking that any moment like this would have been the start of a romance arc in any basic novel. But as he turned towards me, that arc crashed into the floor. His yellow, slit eyes stared into mine.
My face fell slack.
