Emerstones is ruled by a tyrant - a tyrant without mercy, love, or kindness - a tyrant that punishes even the faintest trace of dissent and the faintest hint of incompetence. There is nothing that he does not control, for his injustice is absolute. The people of Emerstones know only his iron fist and the darkness of his dungeons; they receive no share of their princedom's wealth and power.
But this is true only on the surface, for there is more to Emerstones than meets the eye... and more to the tyrant than his people see. And what remains hidden could become their hope... or their doom.

Is cruelty more powerful than kindness? Is it truly better to be feared than loved?

***WINNER of the "BREATHTAKING: A FANTASY AND SCIENCE FICTION NOVEL WRITING COMPETITION!" "You are a secret kept from the world, but not from me." So begins the peculiar message found slipped under a bedroom door on the morning of May first. Theo is the heir to a powerful dictatorship. The number of people allowed to know he exists is few. He has spent his entire life walled up in the Tower, the looming stone monolith from which his father rules over the Land. Merryn is the daughter of political prisoners. She's known who Theo is longer than he would think possible, and she is taking a great risk contacting him via handwritten notes in order to convince him he deserves more than the fate his father has designed for him. She has one month to exchange daily messages with him, to answer his questions and open his eyes to the realities of a world he has never been allowed to see. A revolution is coming to the Land at the end of the month, and if Merryn's notes fail to get their point across, Theo may never live to see the sunrise on June first. A/N: The following letters were originally published each day from May 1st-31st, 2014. As you will see,Theo is allowed to write down a question for Merryn each evening, but you, the reader, won't see these within the body of the story. It may or may not be obvious from Merryn's response what Theo is asking. Part of the fun is guessing what his questions might be, but if you really want to know what they are, a list of those questions is at the end of the story. This story is a re-imagining of Rapunzel. Now, without further ado-I believe a young heir is about to unfold a slip of paper found on the tile floor near his door... Let's see what it says!

𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑵𝒊𝒄𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝑷𝒆𝒐𝒑𝒍𝒆 𝑨𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝑾𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒚 𝑺𝒏𝒂𝒑 They say the nicest people are the scariest when they're angry. But Hellenics? They put that saying to shame. Forged by Maelstrom, the 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐒𝐚𝐠𝐚, Hellenics were shaped as near-perfections of the Primordial Deities-beings of unparalleled might. Over the centuries, their reputation became legend. The men? Killing machines. The women? Torture artists. Some dismiss these claims as myths, arguing that divine lineage alone doesn't create monsters. Time passed. People forgot. The world moved on. Until today. What happens when someone so kind, so easygoing-someone who never lets his anger show-𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐧𝐚𝐩𝐬? Even if it doesn't last long... who knows what damage will be done? Was it trauma? A trigger? Pure, unchecked rage? 𝘖𝘳 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘴𝘦? Because there's a truth people often forget: 𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝒇𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒏 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒘𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒇. And that's exactly what happened to 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐢. "You thought you could threaten her? That you could hurt her, violate her the way that you did and walk away alive?" His voice was filled with raw fury, each word like a blow. "Please," the Sower gasped, his eyes darting to the ghastly charred remains of his men. "I- We didn't mean-" Thane didn't let him finish. With a surge of heat, the flames flared from his body, engulfing the man in a swirling inferno. The Sower screamed, his cries echoing through the clearing as the fire consumed him, but it didn't end his life-not yet. Thane controlled the flames, letting them torture rather than kill, a terrifying display of his power and restraint. "Didn't mean to?" Thane echoed mockingly, leaning down so his face was inches from the Sower. His eyes burned with rage, dark and unrelenting. "You meant every word, every threat, every action. And now you'll burn for it." ******************** In a world torn by war, where men and women are divided into separate kingdoms, Fern, a healer and herbalist, sets out to end the decade-long conflict. Her quest leads her toward the men's kingdom, but an unexpected encounter with an injured man changes everything. Little does she know that the man is the undefeated Ghost of the Battlefield. He was notorious and feared for slaughtering female warriors. Despite the hatred in his eyes, Fern makes the decision to heal him, forging a bond that neither expected. As their worlds collide, they must face the scars of their past. Can a single act of kindness heal old wounds, or will the weight of their history destroy them both?
