There are domed paradises. They have whispering winds, soft grasses, hints of laughter echoing in the background. There are the Outlands. They are dry and dead, cut by unending sun and slicing winds, haunted by the ruins of ancient cities. Sierra lives in the Outlands but attends school in a paradise. She clings to the life she finds underneath the dome, painted with a synthetic sky. But every day she braves the desolation of the destroyed world beyond. She keeps a sketchbook which she guards with her life. One day she is visited by a dangerous Outsider, who sees inside her sketchbook and inside her head, the past that fits within the Outlands. This Outsider, Cain, can forge a new path for the broken world they all live in, but only if Sierra can be convinced to become his counterpart in this delayed destiny.

❝We shouldn't try to figure out every single thing in the world. Why does this happen, how does it happen? Why can't we just be content with being? Instead, the way our eye perceives color is explained, and how Earth was first formed, and everything. We fill ourselves with knowledge so much that something has to be emptied in order to make room for knowledge. So, our soul is poured out. Our appreciation for natural things are gone, thrown away. Our thirst for knowledge overcomes us. The world is a perplexity, let it stay like that. It's more beautiful that way.❞ We were made to live, not to observe. Marley Aspen knows first-hand what it's like to just get by, but to live, that's far out of her reach. Well, that is until befriending the new-girl, Sierra Ryder, shows her how to. But in unexpected twists and turns, Marley learns there is always more underneath the surface, and she gets more than she bargained for. Cover by: @leena-j
