Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony.  Everything changed when the Water Tribes attacked. In the shadows of a blackened sun, the two tribes unified, using their combined strengths to take territory from the other nations. Now, they control most of the seas with a cold, iron fist as the Lunar Republic. 

Liujin never wanted any of this. He didn't want to see his mother and father be taken away. He didn't want to have to steal just to make ends meet, and certainly he doesn't want to be the Avatar.
