Penny Hanson doesn't have the perfect life. Not with the Socs always bothering her and finding out her boyfriend has cheated on her. Again. And now that her parents are divorced, she's left living in Tulsa with a mother who couldn't care less about her, instead of traveling with her father. She was never stable, so when she finds her world has started to crack, she doesn't know how to handle it. Sometimes a blade in your own hands feels better than the one in someone elses.
When her car breaks down on a side road in her town, a boy offers to tow it back to a local garage to be fixed. Sodapop Curtis is his name, and he's got a twinkle in his eyes that never dies. Penny finds herself wanting that liveliness inside of her too, and Sodapop seems to be the only one in the whole town who can give it to her.
