Berk's only heir is dead - killed by a Night Fury who took his body with it. But they can't wallow in their grief - they're Vikings. So they stand tall and continue on.
But then the food runs out, taken by raiding dragons, and Berk, on the verge of death, comes before the infamous Dragon Chief, a man said to have the ability to control dragons.
The Dragon Chief reluctantly agrees to help, but Hiccup and Toothless may have bitten off more than they could chew.

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third is the only son of Stoick the Vast, chief of the Hooligan tribe. As his only son, he is next in line for the chiefdom which wouldn't be a problem, if he wasn't a runt. Viking's believe that a name is what strikes fear into your enemies. Hiccup's obviously doesn't. The name is given to those who won't survive their first winter. Those who don't belong, those who will not be any more than a burden. Hiccup isn't an exception to this. I mean, sure he survived his first winter, and the next fifteen. But he caused problems, not on purpose. Things just happened when he was around. First when he was six, and a nearby furnace blew up when he lost his temper. Then when he was eight, nine, eleven. These strange happenings kept occurring, and nothing he did helped. Everything he did, everything he tried had some way of turning back on him. For the longest time he believe that the God's cursed him.
