"You know it won't go to the West," he said dropping his voice.
"Maybe you're wrong. Who knows," she shrugged. Her shoulders had slumped but she had managed to not let any tears spill.
"Baum knew what he was doing when he made the West wicked, Mary," he hissed.
"The East was wicked in that book too, dumbass," Mary retorted.
Jacob's hands went into fists to keep from pushing at his hair. The tree behind them began to shake slightly. The ground gave a tiny rumble.

As the story progresses you might notice some subtle (and not so subtle) parallels to the Wizard of Oz. As I always advise my students- give it three chapters before setting it aside.

This book is in a perpetual state of needing editing. I hope to return to the chapters to add some details. I'm hoping for a sequel as time allows. Oh, the life a middle school teacher... MORE TIME, I NEED MORE TIME.
