I recommend for you to first read the short story, "A Modern Love Letter" by Nawal El Saadawi first before reading my poem. However, you may understand my poem either way, even if you do not read her short story first. Overall this poem describes the intense feelings of the narrator who finds herself torn between either listening to her deep love for her husband or fulfilling her true desire of freedom from society's beliefs of what the role of men and women should be. Women oppression was a huge deal throughout the 1950's and beyond in Egypt. Her short story takes readers into the mindset of a sociologist who is married to a man that does not care for her as much as she would like. This poem summarizes this short story briefly, but not nearly as much as the insightful and powerful ideals and quotes that Saadawi wrote herself.
