And vowing to bring Sasuke back after he had ran away to gain power only filled him up to take him back for the sake of sakura. But sure enough after a failed attempts at retrieving Sasuke, he returned severely injured and loathing the thought he wouldn't be able to bring Sasuke home. He didn't want to feel that pain anymore in his chest, so his body did the only thing it could to make his body healthy and better. He forgot.
