A land of many kingdoms united as one against a greater foe. With the enemy defeated, this united force became one and peace came onto their world. For a time. Fire, Earth, Water, Air, the Four Elements of the Great Powers. Near two thousand years later, the maps may have changed, but the borders remain. The united country of Alterus is that in name only, each elemental region lorded over by descendants of their former kings. On the surface, the elemental lords rule, but the underworld of Alterus belongs to the crime families. The greatest and strongest of them trace their lineage back before the Unification, when their families held the titles of lords before denouncing their rank in protest of the Unification. These former lords banded together with their fellow elemental based brethren and ruled from the shadows, forming nationalist factions known as Organizations. Where our story begins, the year is 1937, twelve years have passed since the Peace of Whiteswain, marking the end of the decades long Despot Wars. Twelve years of peace. The airships do not blot out the sun as once they did. The planes do not burn in the sky as once they had. The people do not cower in fear at every passing footfall past their door as once they would. But peace...peace has not come, as it never did.
