"Anita sighed from where she sat on the couch next to him. 'You don't eat a lot, do you?' she asked.
Lukas shrugged. 'I'm not used to eating that much.' He was used to chaos, to run-like-your-life-depends-on-it-because-it-does, to bars and spending more time celebrating someone's death rather than their birthday.
'That's sad.' Anita sounded sad. He asked her why. 'Because,' she said, 'you're young and you sound like a soldier. You shouldn't have to.'
Lukas thought about that. Thought about red hair, blue eyes, and London streetwalkers. He thought about May from the streets, how cold her hands were, and what she told him when Chris waited for him outside the church door. 'We're children and we don't have a choice,' Lukas told Anita after a minute. 'It's a war.'
'What is?' Lukas just shook his head and thought of blue eyes in the house to the left."
