A Bird's Wings

Why was he here again? He looked down to the inky black below; rotting claws dripping crimson blood reached up for him, trying to pull him down to be with them. For a moment, he wants to join them. To feel the wind whistling through his hair as he fell, and to hear the deafening screams in his ears lessen and change into gleeful cackles as the claws finally got their payment, their revenge.

Then he hears the jangle of chains, their steady weight planting themselves on his arms. Oh right. He was stuck here, like a bird with clipped wings. He was glad for the chains, their steady weight , but he hated them too. Oooh how he hated them. Their never ending, incessant noise, how their cool metal reminded him that he was stuck here, stuck listening to the screams and cries that hounded him day and night, till he finished helping big brother achieve his goal.

Almost there, he reminded himself. Almost there. Then he could take these chains off, finally free his wings and fly. Then he could finally apologize to them. To the ghosts that hound him.
