He lives alone and has to work to pay rent. Peggy had a hard life with her sisters and her own problems. Being insecure about yourself is normal, but she's not insecure after everything that has happened. Maria didn't know what not being talked about all the time was until she met everyone. She stopped being called a sl*t and she didn't have to deal that much with James R. That much. Lafayette and Hercules knew each other since the very start.
