Marie had given birth to her son Mon-El when she was sixteen. She fell in love with an older man and didn't know what power Clarence held. She didn't realize what Clarence was doing to her and what his true intentions were with Marie.

After Marie gave birth to Mon-El, he was ripped right out of Marie arms and shot in the head, which was intended to kill her but little did she know what was happening to her during her death, Marie's life wasn't ending it was transforming into something marvelous.
