Kiara, schon 17 Jahre alt, erfährt erst jetzt, welches Erbe sie in sich trägt. Sie ist halb Hexenmeisterin, halb Nephilim. Völlig unvorbereitet wird sie in etwas gerissen, dass sie nicht einmal möchte. Sie fühlt sich im Stich gelassen. Magnus Bane, New Yorks bekanntester Hexenmeister und die Lightwood-Geschwister geben ihr Bestes um ihr zu helfen aber da gibt es auch noch das Problem mit Clary, die auf der Suche nach Jace ist und dann spurlos verschwindet. Kiara weiß nicht wo ihr Kopf steht und ist verzweifelt. Doch dann trifft sie auf einen Jungen, der sich als Sebastian ausgibt.

He is darker, harsher, more angry and powerful. His fury and sorrow at almost all of his friends and families' deaths is what fuels him now. One day, as he is mourning his friends in a graveyard, he sees a clear crystal on the ground, which takes him to a strange new place... Sophie is distraught. The Neverseen took Keefe for his new ability he's manifested. They have to make a plan to get him back.
