Their families have been holding a feud, unknown to anyone outside the families, for various centuries now and that isn't going to change anytime soon; at least, that's what they believe. The problem is that a bond as strong as Katniss' and Peeta's isn't one you simply give up. You do anything to preserve it. Even if that means keeping it hidden for more than a decade.
