Carter Mills lives in a world where people are protected by their invisible Guardian Angels, and Nightmares are more than scary dreams-- all unbeknownst by her and the rest of humanity, obviously. A sophomore in high school bullied for striving to defy the status quo in every way shape and form, she's become cynical and untrusting over the years from living with a broken family and her own broken self-worth. 

Everything changes when she's named the Chosen One out of the blue by the mysterious Guardian Council, who plead for her assistance in stopping the Prince of the Nightmares-- she doesn't want to know-- before he succeeds in wiping out Guardian Angel kind and puts all of humanity in danger.

A lot to take in, she agrees. Lucky her, everything's a little easier to deal with when you've got the best friend you never knew you had by your side. 

But what happens when the self-titled Prince is more than a two-dimensional villain?

They start wearing nail polish, dresses like they want to, uses they/them pronouns and shows openly that they are gay by adding a rainbow badge on their bag. Clay, a closeted gay bully, scared of the world around him. He never shows the real him, because he's scared of being judged. Clay bullies George because he's actually really jealous of him and is in love with George. But Clay makes the biggest mistake by kissing George and his world seems to be collapsing. His secret is threatened to come out for the whole world, something he always planned on keeping a secret. As Najwa mourns both her mom and the loss of her closest friend, Rain can't tear his gaze away from the golden remnants of their enemies and Rio does their best to keep everyone fed and healthy. Aspen isn't much help, not when he is holed up in his room, terrified of the power he holds. It's been said that you only realize the importance of someone when they're gone. Whether or not that is true, Aspen would give his life to get Phoenix back. There's guilt, undoubtedly, but also the fact that he has a huge crush on him. They have never even had the chance to kiss or confess their feelings, and that's just tragic. But hey, there's always a chance for a long-distance relationship. As you might imagine, the connection from one world to another isn't ideal. But if they can make it work, there's a chance to return Phoenix and the rest of the infected back to life.

This woman survived a traumatic kidnapping, and you can see the emotional scars in her demeanor. Despite her small size, there's a hidden anger inside her, a result of the injustices she faced. Across from her view another person, quieter but equally significant. They seem restless, constantly shifting their focus. They, too, have a troubled past, having grown up around violence at home.They have ADHD, their mind is always busy, making it hard to concentrate. When the woman leaves, she locks eyes with this person waiting outside. In that brief moment, they understand each other's pain, "He's not actually helping us, is he?" She mumbled softly. Though their lives may never cross again, that simple sentence speaks volumes about their strength and resilience in overcoming their pasts. However, eventually they met again, but in the different place, at the same time, but different day. A delicate connection starts to grow between them, intertwining their lives. Even though they know they'll face difficulties ahead, they see in each other a ray of hope-a possibility for healing, for finding peace, and even for love
