Ever since Emerald has been born, she knew she didn't belong. She was different than the other mermaids. One day, the other mermaids dare her too pass the Barrier Rock that separates the human territory from the merpeoples' territory. Emerald knew that if a human ever saw her, or any mermaid, she could suffer unforgivable consequences.
Emerald's curiosity finally overcomes her, and she decides to pass the Barrier Rock. What she finds on the other side fascinates her; a young human named Joel. Joel is the most perfect creature she has ever seen, but is love for this human able to overcome the fear that she could be punished by death for this unforgivable sin?
