 I spun and watched as she sank to the earth, tears streaming down her porcelain cheeks. My gaze flew to what she was staring at, and the air was knocked out of me as if by an invisible punch to the gut. 

Wendell Granger had blood dripping from his nose and ears. His black, empty eyes were staring into the sky, and his chest was as still as the ground he lay upon.
