In the future people learned how to harvest, collect, and distribute dreams. The world's economy then became dependent of it. Certain laws were made to protect others from nightmares.The black market found this opportunity as great to sell nightmares at an arrangement of prices. 

A government agent was sent to the rundown towns in Eastern Desert, United States. His objective: stop the black market from selling nightmares. He is the key to the end of the war, and both sides want him. Haunted by nightmares himself, he must decide the faith of thousands and how they dream forever.

It started when the rain fell. As it hit the windows rhythmically, I fought my sleep. Fighting off the demons in my dreams. I hadn't realized how real that dream became. Waking up to terrified screaming. My heart racing, the lighting striking and my family begging for their lives. I claimed myself as a coward that very same night. I hated myself. My depression became the best of me. What's worst then your family being slaughtered? Hiding in the closet from the killers. I should've helped, I should've been there for them. The pain between my chest and stomach was growing guilt. So I started thinking smart. Looking at everyone differently. I decided to reopen their cold cases. And when I found the truth it hit me deep.

I didn't want to do the things I did, didn't revel in other people's pain, but I did what I had to to survive. At least that's what I tell myself. This caused his entire way of life to go into turmoil, so why is he willing to risk everything for some random boy he met on the street? ----- (TW!!!!: blood, violence, death, use of weaponry, slight mention of mental manipulation, though not much) if any of these things affect you, DO NOT read on, for they will be periodic themes throughout the entirety of the story. After an epidemic that gave half the population an incurable disease, only a few major cities remained. One of these included the wealthy city of Tallahassee, Florida, where they had the brightest minds looking for a cure. George Davidson was among those minds: his father was one of the richest people in the world prior to the outbreak and had sent George to one of the most prestigious medical schools in the country. Afterwards, after an incident that caused much grief in the Davidson family, George's father had set George on finding a cure. Finally, after four years of sleepless nights and painful losses, George had done it. He'd found the cure. But if that was the case, then why did he hire a coyote to smuggle him out of the city? Why did he run away with the only known cure for zombie-ism? TW: there's not much in this story other than some depictions of blood, violence, death, and just overall gross/gory stuff 12/1/21- this is a cool date for a cool landmark! 800 readssss 😩

(edit) I forgot to add that this started out as a confessional journal about becoming clean after a 10 year + addiction to OTC cold meds, but that was not my style of writing, I liked the material so I wanted to expand it into a novel length work featuring the journal elements. To say this work is a roller coaster would put it lightly. Although there are elements of time travel I would consider my sudden transitions reality travel. I use actual experience and dreams as a foundation, then toss in some fourth wall breaking narratives (meta-fiction), with a sprinkling of facts and quotations from songs and factual articles. It tends to be written similarly to an essay sans the boring. I have been influenced strongly by Vonnegut and W. S. Burroughs , and a wide variety of album rock, and that bleeds through. The tags dystopian and dark humor describe the whole piece best but there is a lot of genre jumping. I've done a good deal of research, not just for factual things but for the type of writing I do. Although not technically fan fiction, there is a nod to Final Fantasy games. The cover photo is a shared copyright, Brian Barbour took the photo, I added treatments.

Long ago, way before our time. A weary traveler left home to find new land for his family to thrive off of. Drought engulfed almost all of Elysium, called The Great Heat. The man traveled far and wide just to find a sign of life anywhere. It took him days and several hundred miles to find anything worth nourishment and care. He braved sand storms and blistering heat, his throat was dry and his feet could hardly carry him any farther. He collapsed onto the ground, his hands burning under the heat of the crackled ground. His vision blurred and mirages played with his suffering senses. His mind projected a tree into his line of vision, withering away but it's branches holding a single fruit. Besides his beliefs of it being a figment of his imagination, he crawled his way to it, bringing himself under the weak shade that it provided. He looked at the glistening purple fruit, what was it? He reached up to grab it, expecting it to fall through the image projected before him. His fingers wrapped around the fruit and he picked it from the branch. It was real! The fruit was real. He eagerly bit into the fruit and its juices trickled down his chin. He sat back and relaxed as the food nourished his body, he drank of its juices and picked out its many seeds, collecting them. He dug a deep hole until he felt moisture in the soil, planting the seeds into the ground. As it grew over time, the man used the old tree to build his home around the new one, tending to it religiously until it beared fruit. He brought his family and they lived there, planting trees and passing on the seeds for other places to spring life. Within five years the drought was over, Elysium was breathing again."
