When Cloudtail receives his warrior name before the older apprentices, Swiftpaw and Brightpaw take matters into their own paws. But tragically, their plan to prove themselves to Bluestar goes horribly wrong.

After a ThunderClan patrol discovers the brutally mauled bodies of the apprentices, Brightpaw is pronounced dead while, miraculously, Swiftpaw is alive, but barely.

Despite his debilitating wounds, excruciating grief and cruel new name, the young cat goes down the long road to recovery, accompanied by the most unlikely cat to help him.
