Two hundred and fifty years after the world ended and the vampire's reign began, Hadley's pregnant mother Aadya, and her mother's sister, Aunt Zenobia, are Wildlings captured and brought into a Compound to reinvigorate the gene pool of genetically modified humans bred to supply the vampires with blood. And when Hadley turns twenty, only weeks away from Conception Day, she becomes the first human in history to ever escape a Barn, determined to give birth to her daughter in the company of her mother's people - the only truly free humans in the world - The Wildlings.
It was supposed to be a simple plan: escape the Compound, get her bearings, then use Aunt Zee's map to locate the Wildling tribes. And if Hadley ran into a vampire, Aunt Zee's one and only rule was "incapacitate and run".
But what happens when Hadley meets the dangerous and devastatingly gorgeous Ruqwik and has to break the rules by forming an uneasy alliance with the vampire? Because, after twenty years, everything beyond the Compound walls has changed, and vampires are the least of her worries.
