In a world where body art is just a sign of maturity, we follow Scarlet through her struggles to cope with the many changes within herself. When tattoos appear on your skin and your eyes change color, this is cause for celebration. Your tattoos that appear are your induction into the adult community of this utopian society. But what happens when you don't have the same tattoos and eye color? what happens when you are born different? Will society accept you? Reject you? Or even...kill you?

I couldn't stop trembling even more now. I calmed down a little more and checked my arm again. I was correct, I wasn't hallucinating. On my shoulder was a tattoo. It was a character of some sort-- in a different language. It looked like it was Chinese mixed with Islamic calligraphy. The skin around my arm was red and irritated. The symbol stuck out like a vein. I hyperventilated. I thought I was going to have a panic attack. I had to sit there, on my bed, and command myself to calm down. "I'm dreaming. I'm dreaming. This isn't real," I whispered. I checked the mirror again and searched all over my body to see if I had any other markings, but so far this was the only one. I shut my eyes, trying to force myself to wake up, but this was real. And for the first time, out of all the panicking, my vision went black.

When you're marked you have two choices; fight or die. Nance lives in the past, literally. Her city is a recreation of early twenty-first century society. To the outside world they're experiments, just rats running around a maze. In an impoverished future world, the city seems to be their only chance of finding where they went wrong, or so they say. Nance doesn't know why, but it doesn't matter, because she's sixteen and it's her turn to be marked. **So I decided to replace the original story with the rewrite because they are pretty much exactly the same. If you do that, it appears on your soulmate's body too. You usually get the writing one by age 17 if you haven't met your soulmate by that time. Everybody has a tattoo; they could be absolutely anywhere on your body. The tattoo begins appearing on the person's sixteenth birthday. Nobody has the same tattoo as they reflected the person's personality. They could be similar, but they are never duplicated. Depending on the person's soulmates mood, the colour of the tattoo changes. When they're mad, it turns a mix of deep red and orange, when they are embarrassed it changes to a bright yellow, when they are upset it turns blue, when they are feeling lonely it turns purple and so on. The only time the tattoo will light up and turn white is when the person and their soulmate are in a thirty foot radius and when you lock eyes with your soulmate, it begins to heat up. That's when you know you've finally found them.
