Nite and her adoptive father live in the far western region of Dahlara, cut off from much of the world. They captain a riverboat and take merchants to nearby port cities. It's a simple, oftentimes difficult life, but it's the life that Nite loves.

Her peaceful world begins to collapse when a group of strangers clad in military uniform arrive at her door and demand that she take them downriver into an off-limits section of the country: The Forbidden Jungle. She knows that if she refuses them, then they will kill her. She also knows that if she goes into the jungle, she won't come out alive.

After all, it is called the Forbidden Jungle for a reason.
