There are some elements more powerful than others, some that need to hide from their own kind because of this. It's the mutations in their blood, the fire in their soul, the age of there stone, and the will to live in their heart that keeps them going, that keeps them alive. Then there is corruption some elements fight back, some let it consume them till all they want, all they need is power. The ones that are only halfway corrupted can learn to live with it. The ones that are fully corrupted can't come back from it.
